First and foremost lets start by saying CONGRATULATIONS!! I’m so very excited to meet you and your new baby and hang out with you all for a couple of hours! Here are some suggestions on how to prepare for your newborn session!
I also want to say my goal for this session is for it to be stress free and a time for you to sit back, relax and enjoy watching your sweet baby rock their first photo shoot. To see more of what a session will look like, I post a ton on my Facebook page.
In order to prepare the baby for this session you will want to plan on feeding him/her about 2-3 hours before you arrive, this way the baby will be nice and ready to fill their belly when you get here. It’s also important not let them sleep in the couple of hours before the session. Even if they normally sleep during the day, trust me, when they are undressed and being posed it will be harder for them to fall into a deep sleep. Keeping them awake may seem like an impossible task (especially in the car) but if you can try bathing, letting them kick around in just their diaper, tickling their toes and even letting them fuss for a bit it will be so much easier to get those super sleepy, squishy newborn photos.
The studio will be warm, I keep it at 80 degrees to keep the baby nice and cozy, so I suggest family members come dressed in layers.
The session will last 2-3 hours (fo full newborn sessions). If the baby seems hungry we stop for them to eat. Basically we are on the babies schedule so depending on how hungry, awake, fussy they are will depend on the length of the session.
I love using pacifiers to sooth and relax the baby between poses. If you have a smoothie (the ones from the hospital are best) please bring it along. If you prefer not to use one I completely understand and respect that so don’t even worry about it!! I do have unopened ones at the studio should you change your mind.
I have wipes and diapers for us to use during the session as well!
Mom & Dad…
Mom & Dad! If you will be in the photos I suggest wearing a white tank for mom and a white nice fitting t-shirt for dad. I do realize this may not align with your style and if not please wear what you feel most comfortable in. I suggest keeping it neutral with no bright colors or crazy patterns so we don’t take the focus away from you snuggling your new baby.
Mom, also in order to prepare for your newborn session, don’t forget to think about your nails. Nail polish is totally fine, I suggest making sure if your nails are chipped just removing the nail polish all together (I type this while looking down at my chipped nails…lol). Also, don’t stress! I know you just had a baby and will only photograph using the most flattering angles!
I love love LOVE documenting siblings with their new baby brother or sister! This may be the single most important and special shots of the entire session!
For sisters I suggest a snug fitting tank in a neutral color or a neutral dress without bright colors or patterns is beautiful as well! You will want to think about their hair, mostly how to pin it back so it stays out of their face.
For brothers, a nice fitting pair of jeans and a white t-shirt works perfectly!
I have my methods of getting the young ones to cooperate. If you have some helpful tips to get them comfortable with me, I would love to hear them!
My studio has a TV with Netflix and some movies and a comfortable area for siblings to hang out! I also have some snacks and water for them to munch on if they get hungry!
Hopefully this helps a little with how to prepare for you newborn session! Please look at my post on the process of a newborn session!
